What is Open Enrollment and Why is it Important?

This is how the Nevada Health link Website defines Open Enrollment:

“Open Enrollment is the yearly period when people can enroll in a health insurance plan. Open Enrollment runs from November 1, 2021 to January 15, 2022. For coverage beginning January 1, 2022 you must enroll by December 31, 2021. Outside the Open Enrollment Period, you generally can enroll in a health insurance plan only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.”

If you’ve ever had health insurance through your employer, you are probably familiar with the term “Open Enrollment”. It’s the time of the year when you can make changes to your existing coverage or enroll in coverage if you opted out the year before.

The same applies to individual health insurance through Nevada Health link, sometimes referred to as “on exchange”. Those people who don’t live in Nevada are probably more familiar with Healthcare.gov, the affordable care act (ACA), or Obamacare.

Before I came to work in the insurance industry, I didn’t realize that you can’t just enroll in health insurance when you want. Based on a lot of the phone calls that I’ve taken, I’m not the only one who didn’t realize that either.

That’s why it’s so important to know when open enrollment is and take advantage of it. Do you currently have no health insurance? Are you unhappy with the plan you have and want to look at other options? This is it this is your time to make things happen.

If you miss open enrollment, you can only enroll in a health insurance plan if you have a qualifying life event or (QLE). This is usually something like, loss of your current coverage, a move into the state, marriage, divorce, something like that. If you do have a QLE, you only have 60 days to make those changes. If you wait past those 60 days, you will have to wait until the next open enrollment.

So, please don’t miss your chance! If you don’t currently have coverage or are unhappy with the coverage that you do have, contact us now to help you get enrolled. Don’t miss your window – January will be here before you know it!
