Medicaid and Private Health Insurance Now Start in One Place
Nevadans can now apply for Medicaid and shop for private health insurance in the same place: Nevada Health Link. One application checks whether you qualify for Medicaid, Nevada Check Up for kids, or a private plan with financial help.

Good news, with a few moving parts
The system still has moving parts, and a Medicaid denial can leave people unsure what to do next. Nevada Benefits is a certified broker on Nevada Health Link, and we can walk you through the whole process at no cost. If Medicaid says no, we can shop and enroll you in a plan right away.
What changed: Medicaid Express
On September 19, 2026, Nevada launched Medicaid Express, a new way to apply for Medicaid online or by phone through Nevada Health Link. No office visit is required.
Before, Nevada Health Link could only flag that you might qualify and pass your file to the Division of Social Services (DSS). Now, for income-based Medicaid, Nevada Health Link can often give you an eligibility answer in real time. If your income points to Medicaid, the system routes you straight into that process.
DSS still has the final say
DSS still does a final review. If they need more information, they’ll contact you by mail.
How the process works
-
Apply once
Apply at NevadaHealthLink.com. You’ll enter your household members, income and a few other details.
-
Get your results
Nevada Health Link checks whether you qualify for Medicaid, Nevada Check Up (for children), or a private plan with tax credits that lower your premium.
-
Choose your coverage
If you qualify for Medicaid, you pick a Medicaid health plan (called a Managed Care Organization, or MCO), and DSS completes a final review.
If you don’t qualify, Nevada Health Link automatically checks what financial help you can get toward a private plan. You don’t have to start over.
One household, more than one program
For example, your kids may qualify for Medicaid or Nevada Check Up while you qualify for a private plan.
Timing is different for each
Medicaid has no enrollment season; you can apply any time of year. Private plans are different. For 2027 coverage, open enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027.
Denied Medicaid? Here’s what happens next
A Medicaid denial isn’t a dead end. It often just means you earn a little too much, which may make you eligible for a private plan with a lower premium thanks to tax credits.
This is where we come in. As a certified Nevada Health Link broker, Nevada Benefits can:
- Review your Medicaid result and explain why you were denied
- Help you respond if DSS asks for more documents
- Shop every plan available to you on Nevada Health Link and apply your tax credits
- Check that your doctors and prescriptions are covered
- Enroll you directly, so you’re not left without coverage
Timing matters
Nevada Health Link notes that a Medicaid denial by itself usually doesn’t open a special enrollment window outside open enrollment. If you apply during open enrollment and the denial comes after January 15, you can generally still enroll in a private plan.
The safest move is to apply now and call us if the answer is no.
Why it still gets complicated
The application is simpler, but the details still trip people up.
Income is tricky
Medicaid looks at monthly income, while tax credits are based on your expected yearly income. Hourly, seasonal or self-employed income can push you over or under a line without you realizing it.
Households can split
Kids may qualify for one program and parents for another.
Rules are changing
New federal rules took effect October 1, 2026 that changed Medicaid eligibility for some non-citizen groups.
Mail matters
DSS requests for more information arrive by postal mail, and a missed letter can stall or end an application.
Overlap costs money
If you’re on a Nevada Health Link plan and become eligible for Medicaid, you need to report it quickly or you could pay full price for the plan.
You don’t have to sort this out alone. Working with Nevada Benefits costs you nothing extra, and we’re locally owned with more than 30 years of experience helping Nevadans with their coverage.
